Nail polish

Nail polish is something that girls put on their nails, if you didn't know, but yes they contain a lot of chemicals that make some of them chip ressitant, even though they chip anyway. (false advertising anybody?) But yes clear coats are made of nitrocellulose, which give them that beautiful shine when you use it as a top coat.

chemistry of life

There's chemistry around you at every turn. No matter where you look there will be some type of chemistry that is occurring. Whether theres a car on the street or the device you are using to read this thing, it all boils down to chemistry. All the plants and everything that is seen all has chemicals in it. To the toothbrush you use to the pants you put on to the nail polish you use everything is chemistry.

chemistry in food

When you bake cookies, or pie you just mix the ingredients and put the product n the oven. Do you ever wonder how that batter turns into something solid that you can hold in your hand? Well that all belongs to chemistry. Thanks to Anessa's post I learned the perfect proportion of things can cause a chemical reaction to occur and the mixing of certain things to your batter can make the end result a little better. This relates to chemistry because with out it we cannot do anything that involves baking and/or cooking.

Brushing teeth is fun!!!

Teeth Brushing is a common practice among the humans of this earth (and maybe even beyond ya never know). Justine explained the components of tooth paste.“hydrates silica, calcium carbonate, aluminum oxides, and various phosphates of calcium or aluminum”. These things are used for many different puposes as well like chalk and sand. (yummy!) But ya Brush yo teeth.

Salt is cool

Salt is cool like Annessa!!!( Love ya girl :) ) we put it on our food and we put it on our food and so on. Sometimes we add too much and we just like image ya just like that. But food is not the only thing we use salt we use it to melt ice as well. The ice used is made of sodium chloride like table salt but chemicals are added to it as well. When an something not known is being added to water it causes the water to melt such as salt and it is called Freezing Point Depression. So ya cool.

bubble gum!!!!

Buble gum is great! It was originally chemists made up ofsap of a tree called chicle but now chemists learned to make gum using synthetic rubber. Of course there is also Flavors and colors added to it. But this relates to chemistry because chemists made it up.

Makeup is fab

Make up is usually used to protect in some cases, cover up in others, and just to play around in some cases. But did you know that makeup has very harsh chemicals according to Sarah  http://avogadrosalad.wordpress.com/page/2/. She is great. Anyway ya so they have to like remove the bins of makeup because they damage the bins. Honestly this is why i rarely wear makeup. Maybe i can create a really good safe brand of makeupin the future HHMMMMM.....anyway moral of the story be careful of what you clump on your face everyday. :)

SMILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to dhara http://captainchemistry.tumblr.com/ I now know what makes teeth whiteners  whiten your teeth. Hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. When this is put on your teeth it attacks two layers of your teeth the enamel and the dentin. See this is why i don't use teeth whiteners. They can really hurt you teeth, and i like my teeth and plan to keep them for a while.

UNDAWATER

Yay Dhara!!! http://captainchemistry.tumblr.com/page/3We can't breathe under water (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzrUuMXcDrA) if you watch the first twenty seconds of this video it can testify that we cannot breathe under water. 2 Hydrogen atoms are bonded to one oxygen and we cannot absrob the O2 in the water. But le poissons can easily bretahe under water.

lets talk about soap!!!!!!!!

Soap is cool. It makes your hands clean most of the time....  I'm one of those people who does not like the soap dispensers at school. Yes i said it. Someone had to right. And then there's that one bathroom that does not have a soap dispenser. Like what? But  have you ever wondered how soap works. I wouldn't have until Patrick mentioned it on his blog. (http://alltheothergoodurlsargon.tumblr.com/). So the main ingredients are triglycerides and  alkali. triglycerides are hydrophobic and alkali are hydrophilic. The triglyceride bonds with the dirt, and the alkali stays and washes it off.

hot air balloons

Hot air balloons are cool. They use chemistry to help them stay afloat. They use hydrogen. Chemistry is also involved in making the fabric and keeping it durable so that it will not rip or anything. YAY! I never knew this until i read Justine's chem blog. http://justine-chem-5.tumblr.com/page/2. So ya.

GUMMY BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes!

Gummy bears are great. Since i run cross country I've learned that they are  good snack to eat after a race or before. But i did not know that by adding potassium chlorate to a beaker and heating it up then putting a gummy bear in the beaker it could cause purple fire. The reaction occurs between the sucrose in the gummy bear and the air around there and the potassium chlorate, it then creates carbon dioxide and water and potassium chlorite. YAY!  I didn't know this but Lindsey at http://chemistry2013-14.tumblr.com/taught me. YAY for gummy bear explosions. But ya this relates to chemistry because there is a reaction that occurs and then products are given at the end.

yay for spicy food

spicy food anybody? Tis my favorite thing especially hot sauce. I put it on anything, and everything. Well why does spicy food fell or taste so spicy how bout spencer tells you linked here http://okspenco.tumblr.com/. But ya like we aren't really even tasting real spiciness it is just a feeling when the capsaicin hits your VR1 receptors. Which is quiet cool like its not even real tho. But ya there you have it. Spicy food is not really that spicy so suck it up and eat some. I think i will. anyway enjoy your day.

yay for chocolate

Who doesn't like chocolate?  Not me. But i never knew that chocolate had so much chemistry in it. You have to temper it to make it glossy and sheeny as ZOE ORLINO said in her blog (http://ch-e-mis-t-ry.tumblr.com/) She was so nice as to explain why chocolate gets all clumpy when you try to melt it. It is quite the job if i say so myself. To maintain the bonds of chocolate and help it separate you have to add like butter or some type of oil or milk. I love chocolate and this relates to chemistry because you have to break the bonds and such which is chemistry.

and yes i did choose the most decedant chocolate pictures so that you would go out and buy some.

DINOSAURS ARE BACK????

WHAT!!! no i'm kidding.... it was funny right i know you believed it i know you did.....Don't lie to yourself. Well anyway scientist think now that the extinction of dinosaurs were due to acid rain. When an asteroid hit rocks rich of sulfur. this could have released sulfur trioxide. Which could have released acid rain and melted basically everything in sight. This relates to what we are learning to specifically because it talks about sulfur tioxide and we learned how to write that in chemical form which is S03 which looks like a polyatomic ion but it is not because it needs a sign like a negative or positive. YAY!!!!

Jelly!

Is jelly a solid, liquid, gas? Who can ever tell? OHOHOHOHOHOHOH!!!! I can!!! Well Dhara can tell you actually but i learned it from her. In the powder form of jelly there is a protein called collagen. This is what gives us our flexibility and strength because it is also located in us.  Wow!!!!! we are like jelly. what do ya know??? Anyway the collagen is bonded by triple helix hydrogen bonds.  When the jelly is heated teh bonds move freely but when it cools the chains of protein get entangled making them more liquid like and when is sets it becomes wobbly. YAY!!!

Pop that corn!

Popcorn is everybody's favorite snack whether it is the healthy no butter kind or the full of salt butter, and cheese kind. Whatever it may be The kernel of popcorn is coated with butter and when it is put in the microwave the pressure builds up because it does not have enough room for the steam so it builds and builds and builds until POP! the kernel pops and then you take it out of the microwave and you can eat it. why are you sad onion....?

Well the onion is not the only one crying for being cut in half. you yourself are crying. and why would this happen lets ask Mr. Westervelt who has a very good explanation for this. http://alltheothergoodurlsargon.tumblr.com/ I know this does not explain a lot ( follow him anyway and me if you already haven't) of what is going on but I will help you with that. When you cut into an onion cells break as naturally they would when you cut something. Sulfenic acids are formed from the amino acids in the cells, and enzymes that were once told to stay away from the sulfenic acids decide to be rebels and mingle with them. This forms S-oxides, and this flies into your eye, and reacting with your tears making you cry just a little. But one thing i learned from the Boxcar Children I believe (dont quote me on it) that if you cut an onion under water it will not make you cry. Fascinating right? When under water the chemicals cannot escape. Also refrigerating the onion can help slow the process down and not make you cry a lot.

yo! gurt!

Who doesn't like yogurt? You? No? Not you? Your friend? You best friends moms uncle's cousin's wife's brother? Ya him? Okay cool. But since you do like yogurt let me tell you the chemistry behind it. It is all made from some old milk and bacteria. Sounds delicious right? But u said you liked it...so..... The milk is fermented by bacteria. The lactose in the milk, C12H22O11, changes to lactic acid C3H6O3. This makes the milk thicker and it lowers the pH level. The acidity of the fermentation gives the tanginess to the yogurt. Then from there you can add the flavoring like strawberry, bayberry, and stickberry! Do you see what I did there? Like straw, hay, and stick like the cows eat the.....whatever.......I know you really understood and you just did not want to admit it. :p

Pop Rocks!!!!!

Pop rocks are a very popular candy that is out on the market. Some people believe that a boy died from eating pop rocks and chugging some soda which is very untrue. That could not cause you to die what so ever. Then thing that makes pop rocks pop in your mouth is the carbon dioxide that is trapped in the candy. When the saliva dissolves then candy the carbon dioxide is released and it pops in your mouth. I never knew that pop rocks contain carbon dioxide just like soda although not as much. The pop rocks are not dangerous so I'm pretty sure that eating them is safe.

Glowing fish!!!!???!!?!?!??!?!?

Sarah, over at Avogadro's salad, mentioned that scientist have discovered that some species of fish can glow in the dark. Like what??? How does that even happen???? Scientists were originally made to detect environmental pollutants. They added a  florescent gene to the fish to make them glow. And since then they have become very popular. They emit light after a certain type of radiation this relates to chemistry because it talks about light and how it is emitted from a fish.

cupcakes and elements?

Tflstar89 also known as Tara to most people made a great post about the chemistry of baking and how baking powder and baking soda are used because they release carbon dioxide and make the cupcake fluffy because of the air pockets. I also did my own research abput that and found out that baking is all based onb chemical reactions and they help with the process of baking to make anything from a pie to a cupcake. This relates to chemistry becuase it talks about carbondioxide and that baking is a science and not just a fun hobby.

chemistry puns and jokes

What did the chemist say when he found two isotopes of helium? He He This relates to chemistry because the element helium has the symbol He and when the chemist found two isotopes it became two He's this making the joke hilarious. Although the correct way to write it is He2 but to make it seem like the chemist was laughing. There are many other jokes that have to do with chemistry and they use the chemical symbol as well and the manipulate them in some way to make them seem like they are funny.

Quick! Sand!

Quick sand is made of primarily sand obviously, water, salt, and clay. There are large gaps in the sand filled with water and when it is disturbed it starts to sink. it is turned from a jelly feeling to a liquid essentially. As soon as the mixture is disturbed the sand sinks to the bottom and he water floats to the salt. The salt as soon as the clay becomes a liquid the salt becomes electrified and they bond together and they form bigger particles that surround the body part. They best way to get out of quick sand is to make small circles with the trapped body part to mix the water and clay once again and then you can essentially get out. This relates to chemistry because it talks about bonding and how you can break and regain the bond. i never knew that you could get out of quick sand.

Candle wax where you at?

I have always wondered where the wax from a candle goes when it is burned. In my room I am always reluctant to light my candles because the wax just disappears and in not time i have to get a new candle. So whenever there is a sale i am tempted to by like 14 because i know the candle wax will diminish if and when i burn it. I searched this up on the compute and i found out that the Wax burns into water and carbon dioxide which are bot omitted to the air around the candle. Wax is made of hydrogen and carbon atoms that are linked together. The heat vaporizes the wax and then it reacts with the oxygen and poof its gone. No wonder..... But this does relate to chemistry because it talks about hydrogen and oxygen bonds and how they can diminish under the right circumstances.

colored snow

Did you know that there can be colored snow? Well there can be the most common type of colored snow is green snow. What cause the snow to be green is the algae that grows on it. It can also be different colors based upon the type of algae that grows on the snow.
This is green Antarctic snow. The snow is green due to the presence of Chlamydomonas algae.Green Snow. It can also be called watermelon snow because it can have the sweet smell of watermelon. and it can also come in the color red. The chlorophyll that makes the algae green also has a second red carotenoid, which protects the algae from ultra violent light and has the ability to obtain energy to melt snow and give the algae water to survive. Also the snow can react with pollutants in the air to make it form colors like orange. This pertains to chemistry because it talks about light and how it affects the algae and how it protects the algae form UV lights. I never knew that algae could grow on snow. This was a very interesting topic.

Clouds!

Clouds are essentially water vapor in the sky. There are three types of clouds cirrus, stratus, and cumulus clouds. Cirrus clouds are the highest up in the air and they are made of ice crystals because they are in the highest position where the air is more cold. They look wispy up in the air. Cumulus clouds are in the middle of the sky. Not all the way at the top but relatively far from the ground. Their chemical make up consists of ice crystals and water vapor. They look more of a flatterer base and go upwards. The last cloud type of the Stratus clouds and they are close to the ground.  They form a layer above the ground. They are made up of water droplets.

Also chemists have found a way to make it rain voluntarily. They use a chemical called  silver iodide which is dry ice and they spray a certain amount into the air from an airplane and the dry ice freezes the water droplets making it to heavy in the clouds thus "raining on our parade" again! Any through the use of chemicals we an essentially do anything even make it rain as it seems to be so if we are ever in a drought we know what to do. I never knew that people could actually make it rain.

Scientists have made a water jet printer

Scientists from China have created a water jet printer. Instead of the old ink jet printer water jet could replace them soon in the future. They were able to make the paper reusable. They coated regular paper with PEG or polyethylene glycol numerous times to make the paper reusable if needed. They would spray the paper with the desired shape of the letter with water and it would stay completely readable for up to 22 hours and then when it is needed to be erased, it should be heated at 70 degrees Celsius and it would be made completely clear so it could be reused.

this is what the color would consist of to make the color that is shown above. This picture shows the chemical make up of the color. This relates to chemistry because it shows the chemical make up of the dyes used to color the paper. I never knew that this was possible this could be very revolutionary if the time to read the dye stayed longer (which they are working on) When i need to hand in my papers i could possibly use this to write it and then would be able to erase it so that i can reuse the same piece of paper.

Water and oil don't mix

Water and oil/grease do not mix. Water is used to clean, and for drinking and other necessities but it just cannot mix with oil/ grease because oil/grease is hydrophobic meaning that they are water fearing and they will never mix with water. Salt and sugar on the other are hydrophilic they dissolve in the water and if you put the water by the sun or somewhere hot the water will dissolve leaving a white powder which is essentially the salt or sugar depending on what you put in the water. Hydrophilic things dissolve in hydrophilic things and hydrophobic things dissolve in hydrophobic things. Things with similar properties will dissolve in each other but salt and oil will not mix because they have very different properties. Soap and detergents are exceptions because can either act like water or oil and they can mix with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic things. This relates to chemistry because it talks about hydrophobic and hydrophilic things. I never knew that hydrophobic things can mix with each other.

Salt is breaking the rules of chemistry

Salt is a very normal compound that when sodium and chloride combine they from little cubes and all is well in salt land. Or so they thought......Salt can have dramatic changes when put under tremendous heat and pressure. When salt was crushed between two diamonds and then was shot with a laser. The structure changed dramatically and one sodium linked with three or even seven chlorine. Or two sodium atoms could link with three chlorine atoms. These new linkages can form new and exotic structures for our well known table salt. A scientist said that these extreme pressures can be found in stars and planets and this means that this could also be taking place in the universe as well. The sodium chloride usually forms an ionic bond but when put under extreme pressure they can form a metallic bond which means that electrons move from one atom to the next instead of just staying with one atom. This relates to chemistry because it talks about the bond of atoms and the different types and how it can change based upon the amount of pressure and heat that a compound is under. I never knew that salt could form different structures when put under different pressures this could be a major break through i think.

The chemistry of Art

Art and chemistry are very closely intertwined. Sculptors, artists, and photographers all use chemicals to create their woks of art. The sculptor uses clay and other things to make sculptors. Depending on the material they use the chemical make up of that material allows them to chip or mold and things of that nature. Painters, and drawers use different drawing utensils which contain different chemicals to make the picture unique pencils use clay and graphite which is made from carbon. Paint is made with either water or oil, and then pigments which are chemicals. Crayons are made of wax which is made from the chemical petroleum. Chalk is made of calcium carbonate and limestone.  In photography certain chemicals are sensitive to light so the amount of light that hits that chemical allows the photograph to be either darker or lighter. This relates to chemistry because it talks about all the chemicals and different chemicals that are used to make paintings sculptors and  photographs. I never knew there was so much chemistry that went along with art!

Treeeeeeeess!!!

Trees are cool. They help the environment out a lot. The normal thing that most people know is that they help get rid of Co2 in the environment. But did you know that trees can also get rid of waste from the ground, and pollution from the sky? Well, they can. Phytoremediation is what it is called to use plants in that such way. Phyto means plant and remediation means to cure. Asparagus plants, and spider plants help to get rid of cigarette smoke and other pollutants in the air. Which is really helpful for the safety and health of the people and other animals that live. Trees can also make the ground water cleaner. It takes the water up through its roots from the ground and it cleans it and sweats it out in the leaves. So if anyone is ever stranded in a forest there will be water in some of the leaves of trees such as Pine trees, eastern cottonwood trees, hybrid poplar trees, and juniper trees. (if you know how to identify trees of the back of your hand this could also be useful. The trees can also team up with bacteria to help the soil become cleaner along with the water in the ground. This related to chemistry because it talks about how the trees cannot only help with the Co2, but can also help with the water and pollutants as well. I never knew that trees were so special. I <3 trees!!!

Don't you (Acid ) Rain on my parade!

Acid rain is very dangerous to the environment. It prevents plants from growing properly. The most common things that cause acid rain are exhaust from cars and trucks and factories. The fumes contain sulfur and nitrogen oxides and they react with moisture from the air and they create sulfuric and nitrite acid in the air. Scientists are trying to reduce the amount of sulfur that is released into the air by burning  limestone in the factories and that reduces the sulfur oxide that is emitted into the air. This is related to chemistry becuase it taught me how acid rain is formed in the air and it deals with a lot elements that are in air.

Green Chemistry

Green chemistry is the way of making chemicals in a safer way so as not to hurt the environment. Normally when scientists make chemicals they make a lot of byproducts that are associated with that and it would hurt the environment. Now they are trying to be "Green " and trying to make less byproducts. This would help the environment in a tremendous way. For examples makers of Advil and Motrin used to make those medicines in a way that caused a lot of damage and many byproducts. But now they make it in a more green way. This is related to chemistry because it taught me the meaning of the word green because i never really knew the meaning of green in that way i just thought it was recycling, but it is not. so this taught me about it could be used in chemistry.

when you sweat......

when you sweat you lose a lot of water plus a lot of electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals that help with the contraction of muscles and the regulation of water in your cells. The most abundant  electrolytes are potassium, chloride , and sodium. when they are released from your body they form a salt which cause sweat to have such a salty taste (if you've ever tasted it ). Regulating the amount of water in your system is important because it can cause you to become dizzy and get cramps. This relates to chemistry because it talks about salts and elements such as potassium, chloride, and sodium
